Statement of Faith

A full understanding of true Christian beliefs can of course be found in the Bible, but here is a statement that summarizes basic Christian beliefs in (hopefully) easy to understand language.

The Holy Scriptures as originally given by God are divinely inspired, without error, entirely trustworthy, and are the only supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
There is only one true God,  who is eternal and exists in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.  God alone is perfect in every way and totally trustworthy.  God is all powerful, knows everything, and is present everywhere.  He is the Creator of all and sustains all things.
The Father has always existed, has never been born or been created.  He has always been and always will be the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ.  He put into place the way for people to have a relationship with Him, and is the Father of all who have accepted His gift of love and have received new life through faith in Christ.
Jesus Christ is God in the flesh.  He  was born of a virgin, lived a life without sin, performed miracles by the power of God.  He was crucified, dying on the cross to provide a way for people to be set free from sin.  He was buried and rose to life again bodily on the third day.  He returned to heaven, where He prays for us.  He will return again in power and glory.
People sinned when they chose to try to find life in their own way, apart from God and His plan.  This happened first when Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  Everyone since that time, with the exception of Jesus Christ, has at some point sinned and chosen to stay away from God in favour of their own ideas.  Salvation from sin and restoration to relationship with God is possible only through Jesus Christ, because of His death on the cross.  We receive this salvation by faith, by trusting in what Christ has done for us, not by doing anything to earn it.  Salvation means that our lives will be changed and renewed by the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is equally God with the Father and the Son.  He works in the world today to comfort and come alongside to help believers in Christ, to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment, to teach God's truth, to bring about change in lives that is impossible apart from God, to give power to believers to live a holy life and tell others the good news about Christ, to bring unity among true believers.  The Holy Spirit lives within all believers in Christ, and the evidence that He is there will be seen through ever increasing love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control in the lives of these people.  The Holy Spirit also gives various spiritual gifts (spiritual abilities) to all believers to use in service for God.
The true Church is not a building, nor is it simply an organization of people who meet to talk about the Bible.  The true Church consists of all true believers in Christ.  It started with the first followers of Jesus and has continued until this day.  The Holy Spirit works in the Church today in exactly the same way as He has done since its beginning, and He will continue to work in this way until the return of Christ.  The life of the Church is to be characterized, not by rigid adherence to various religious rules and regulations, but by lives lived in the power of the Holy Spirit, as believers let the Holy Spirit fill them.
There will come a day when God will judge the living and the dead.  Those who accepted the salvation He offered will live forever with Him.  Those who did not accept salvation will spend eternity in hell, apart from God.
